This is all being said by someone, mind you, that hates sniping in video games and generally believes their mechanics universally sway towards being overpowered/meta defining. If her lethality was brought down on top of that, she’d be a completely dead hero. The falloff nerf in particularly makes for some serious interaction changes based on maps, which means less effectiveness overall since Widow would be run on these maps purely for the specific obscene sightlines that can get her surprise kills. Less scoped shots + falloff damage at far ranges has very much changed the value of the hero and how applicable she can be. If she doesn’t have that fearsome bite to look out for, why would you realistically pick such a challenging hero over a more capable, less stressful one? 300 damage is a pretty chunky and decent reward for what it takes to nail those headshots.Īnd especially after this Widow nerf, I definitely don’t think she needs her damage lowered. Headshot kills is basically all Widowmaker provides, the rest of her pressure is just an extension of that lethality. Even he switches off reasonably often though he ends up playing a lot of echo, soldier and even widowmaker when pharah isn't working for whatever reason.Considering all of Widowmaker’s value comes from her precision lethality, I do think 300 is pretty necessary.
It can be done though the #1 DPS player for the past few seasons (even before the hitscan nerfs) in the EU ladder is a pharah main (YZNSA) that has shown just how strong she can be in the right hands. You can play pharah against any comp and with almost any comp, although her weaknesses really start to overpower her strengths when you're playing with supports with little/no long range healing capability (moira, lucio, baptiste) on a map with little vertical cover against multiple heroes that can challenge you (Soldier, McCree, Ashe, Widowmaker, Echo, Sombra, Hanzo on DPS Ana, Baptiste, Zenyatta on Support DVa on Tank). Even hanzo can take you out at medium range with 2 bodyshots. Widowmaker has an effectively infinite range (she does have damage falloff after a certain point, but it is quite an extreme distance and very few maps even offer a long enough sightline for this) and all she needs to do is headshot you once, which isn't very difficult as newer pharahs can have relatively predictable movement.
Ana has an infinite range hitscan no damage falloff sniper rifle with a relatively fast rate of fire that kills you in 3 bodyshots.
If the player hits some headshots it can be even faster than that. Soldier 76 is insanely strong right now (on the verge of OP) and will generally be able to take you down at range faster than you can shoot 2 rockets. Some maps have very little cover at the altitude where pharah wants to fly - think Junkertown 1st point - which makes it really difficult to play her because you will just get beamed by hitscans even after the nerfs. Assuming you're playing against mechanically competent players that will shoot you whenever they get the chance, pharah is a bit map dependant as she heavily relies on cover.
